Breaking the Boundaries

Last weekend, I was quite fortunate to attend a national youth summit program by Global Citizen Corps. There youth leaders from around the state were able to meet, share ideas, and spend a wonderful time in the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon. We spent days learning about food security, access to education, conflict, and climate changes; but perhaps the highlight of my week was the Video Conference with students from Iraq.

What comes to mind when you think of Iraq?

Most people say: War, oil, money, and poverty; Otherwise negative things. To my surprise I was one of those people. In my head all I saw was a place full of darkness and despair. Most people may think this way.

The media has a way of brain-washing and only showing one side of a situation. If you haven’t noticed, most of the media portrayed on the news is negative. It took me waking up at 5:30 A.M to see the truth and to see a place like I’ve never seen before. Who knew that just video chatting with students, whom I’ve never met would have such an effect on me?

Now all I see are vibrant people, full of hope and dreams just like me! Despite all that’s going on they never give up. They still go and give their all to their community, much more than I have. I guess I should be ashamed. It was as if I forgot that there are people in Iraq; people who care and also want to make a difference.

What comes to mind when I think of Iraq?
Vibrancy, Love, Inspiration, and Optimism.
